It's Michael Jackson's Birthday... And It's Fly's Birthday, Too!

Sunday, August 29th, was Michael Jackson's Birthday! Long live the memory of the King of Pop!

But in our blues bar in mid-America, it was Fly's 50th birthday, too.

Fly's real name is Ernestine. But since she is crossed-eyed and a constant nuisance... talk, talk, talking all of the time... we call her Fly.

There is a tradition in nightclubs around here for women who are celebrating their birthdays to have other bar patrons pin money on their blouses or lapels... $1 bills or even $20 bills... to wish them a Happy Birthday.

Did I mention that Fly was greedy, too.

Well, it seems that Fly planned two birthday parties for herself... in two different nightspots... just two days apart... so that she could collect TWICE as much money on her birthday.

She started out with a party on Friday night... just two blocks away from our nightclub.

Then she had a grand birthday party at our nightclub with beautiful birthday decorations everywhere... and me... the best deejay in town... deejaying just for her affair. Well, not really. I always deejay in our nightclub... every Sunday night. And this Sunday night was no different. But to hear Fly tell it, I was deejaying just for her birthday party.

Well, whatever makes her happy. I get paid... either way. But to be honest with you, Biella, I would do it for free. I just love music!

At about 9:30 p.m., Fly entered our nightclub wearing this beautiful bright red satin spaghetti-strapped evening dress... with diamondlike accessories. Just beautiful! That is... until your eyes gazed from the dresss to Fly's face... and her bespeckled-cocked-eyes.

I announced her entrance over the loud speaker. And everyone gave her their full attention as she advanced to the front of the room to her special birthday table.

Then I began to rock the house. And everyone danced and laughed. And went up to Fly to pin money on her dress... which made Fly laugh and dance all the more.

But as the evening wore on, the patrons began to wonder when Fly was going to serve her birthday dinner... which is customary for these affairs.

It seemed, however, that Fly had spent all of her money on decorations... and her dress... and her first birthday party (two days prior). And Fly didn't have enough money to prepare and serve a dinner for this her second birthday party.

So, quickly... Fly dispatched her closest friends to muster-up a couple packs of processed cheese, cold cut deli meats, crackers, some broccoli, celery stalks, carrots and dip. And they made a spread for her guests to nibble on.

When the guests realized that that was all that was going to be served for the birthday party dinner... they ate what was edible... and immediately left in disgust! After all, they had pinned money on Fly twice in three days. And they felt like... why did she invite us to a birthday party... if it was not going to be a REAL birthday party?

And to add insult to injury... around 1 a.m.... big Cecil came up to Fly on the dancefloor... amid what was left of her birthday guests... and demanded that she pay him for the hams that he had smoked and prepared for her first birthday party. She had not paid him his $35 for smoking her hams.

With about $100 pinned to her dress, Fly could not claim that she did not have the money to pay Cecil. So, she slowly unpinned the money from her dress and paid the angry man. He snatched the money and stormed out... vowing to never deal with her again!

And for the first time... I actually felt sorry for Fly.

Her greed had exploded all over her... and ruined what should have been a wonderful night for her.

While she was busy plotting to gain more money for her birthday... she forgot to stop and thank God for the most important thing of all... another year added to her life.

The rhythm of this blue note is: Those who feed on greed will never succeed.
